Tips For Decorating Your Home With Tulips

Posted on

One thing you will notice in many photos of professionally-decorated homes is an abundance of flowers. Tulips are a wonderful choice because they look beautiful when they are closed and freshly cut as well as when they are in full bloom.

However, you must make sure that you are taking care of your tulips the right way so that they last:

Display Tulips the Right Way

Tulips have a way of brightening up any room. They work great as a centerpiece on a dining table or in the living room. You could even have a small bouquet of tulips in your bedroom.

Some people think that you should insert straws into the stem of the tulip in order to get the flowers to stand upright. This will damage the flower and will severely limit the amount of usable time you can decorate with it.

Instead, straighten the curved stems by gently rolling them inside newspaper and then immediately putting them in cool water for two hours. Afterwards you can arrange the tulips in the vase of your choice. Pack the flowers close together to prevent drooping.

Daily Care for Your Tulips

Change the water in your vase every day. This is especially important if you are using a clear vase. If you do not want to remove the flowers from the vase and rearrange them then you can use a turkey baster to suck the water out for replacement.

The vase needs new warm water every day. You can also add a teaspoon of sugar to the water to spruce up the tulips. Adding a teaspoon of bleach to the vase is important if you are using a clear vase. The bleach kills any unwanted microbes and keeps the vase looking clean. Don't hesitate to add small amount of bleach to other vases as well. Even though you won't see the difference, it will make it easier to clean the vase afterwards.

In addition to having new water in the vase, you should mist the head of the flower once daily. This is a great chore for young children.

For longest lasting flowers, put them in the refrigerator over night. If you are unable to do that, then you could move the flowers to a cool spot, such as near an air conditioning vent.

If you follow these tips you can plan on decorating with a beautiful bouquet of tulips for about 10 days. If you are unsure of what color of tulips to purchase you should talk to your interior decorator. She can tell you how to choose a color that will either complement or contrast with the color scheme of your home.
